Curriculum Vitae

 

Born 24.12.1913 in Plovdiv. Graduate of Sofia University (1936). Specialized in Royal Scholl of Mines, Imperial College of Science and Technology, London (1940-1945).

Professor of mineralogy and crystallography (University of Sofia), member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, the German Academy ‘Leopoldina’ and the Russian Academy of Sciences. Honorary member of the Mineralogical Society, the Geological Society and the Geologists' Association of the United Kingdom, of the Russian Mineralogical Society and the Ukrainian Mineralogical Society. Past President of IMA and Past Vice-President of IAGOD, as well as IGCP expert at UNESCO. Former director of the National Natural History Museum in Sofia and of the Geological Institute of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Honorary President of the Bulgarian Mineralogical Society. Author of textbooks on mineralogy and crystallography, as well as of over 260 publications.

 

Main fields of interest: mineralogy (general mineralogy – classification of minerals; regional mineralogy), crystallography (morphology and crystal growth), mineral deposits (regional metallogeny).

A. In Bulgaria

 

I. In the Sofia-University:

            1938 - Assistant in the Institute of Mineralogy and Petrology.

            1945 - Associate professor.

            1953 - Full professor and head of the newly created Chair of mineralogy and crystallography (until 1978 - pension retire).

            1961-1962 - Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Biology, Geology and Geography.

 

II. In the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS):

            1961 - Corresponding member.

            1966 - Member of the Academy (Academician).

            1961-1973 - Head of the Department of mineralogy at the Geological Institute.

            1972-1989 - In accordance with the integration between BAS and Sofia-University head of the Sector for mineralogy and geochemistry at the Unified Centre for Earth Sciences of BAS.

            1968-1972 - Academician-Secretary of the Sector for geological and geographical sciences at the BAS and a Member of the Presidium of the BAS.

            1978-1982 - Director of the Geological Institute at the BAS.

            1974-1989 - Director of the National Natural History Museum at the Presidium of the BAS.

            - Since 1990 founder and President (1990-1992; 1993-1995) of the Bulgarian Mineralogical Society; Honorary President (1996-2004).

            - Member and president (1970-1984) of the National Committee of Geology in Bulgaria.
